  • The Perfect Autumn Afternoon in Stillwater

Today’s blog is in honor of anyone who’s ever wished they could escape reality and jump through their TV to live in Stars Hollow.

You’re in luck, because you can come pretty darn close just by spending an afternoon in Stillwater, MN. There’s no better place to capture the cozy essence and eccentric vibe of our favorite fictional town.

Here’s a lineup of all the things I’d do during my ideal afternoon spent in our favorite rivertown:

    1. Pre-bridge Prep at Mike and Kat’s Other Place

Before doing anything, I’d drive through the beautiful historic North Hill Neighborhood and swing by the absolute sweetest coffeeshop in town, Mike and Kat’s Other Place. Not only will you find delish seasonal flavors (hello, snickerdoodle latte and spicy cinnamon mocha!), but the ambiance can’t be beat. Located in a historic building loaded with charm and character, you’ll enjoy the carefully curated interior design and small-town vibe. Be prepared to be served with a smile by Mike and Kat, whose passion about their coffee craft is abundantly clear.

If you’re lucky, you might even get to pet a corgi or two! Who needs a Luke’s when you’ve got Mike and Kat?

    2. Cross State Lines
Once I’d gotten my decaf in hand, I’d head on over to the lift bridge, about a one mile walk to the Minnesota side. The walk across the bridge into Wisconsin and back is the perfect distance to get your steps in without wearing yourself out.
    3. Peruse the Shops
Before heading home, I’d definitely make a few stops along the historic main street. I always have to take a peek into Käthe Wohlfahrt and ogle the Christmas ornaments and decorations. They are SO cute, and it never fails to get me in a festive mood. Autumn is the perfect time to pick out a special ornament to adorn your tree in a few months.
After that, I’d make sure to hit up Sota for some cute Minnesota themed goodies like beanies, charcuterie boards, glassware etc.

By the end of my adventures, my perfect autumn afternoon would almost be over! If you’ve got a little bit more time, you might want to swing by Gloria’s for some soft serve to wrap up your visit on a sweet note.

How would you spend your perfect afternoon in Stillwater? Comment below!

  • Just You Wait, Mama.

It’s happened to all of us at some point; It’s a beautiful, sunny day. You packed up your diaper bag, put actual pants on, brushed your hair, and headed out to enjoy a relaxing stroll to the playground before parking your stroller next to the swing set. It’s nearly nap time and you know you’re cutting it close, but the weather is so great! You just had to get out and get some fresh air with your toddler.

Apparently, you’ve pushed your luck just a bit too far, because little Suzy starts whining after a few minutes and before you know it, you’ve got a full-blown tantrum on your hands, alligator tears and all. Your frustration gets the best of you, and you let a sigh slip past your lips.

You’re trying to console your kid and coax them back into the stroller to head home when a dark shadow begins to loom over you- and it’s not the sunshade on your Graco. Suddenly, the fresh air turns stale, the balmy breeze begins to feel like ice, and your sixth sense sends goosebumps down your arms. You turn around, only to find…
A grandma lurking over your shoulder.

“Oh, that’s nice,” you naively think, “she’s probably admiring how cute my baby is.”

Oh, but little did you know, that tiny whisper of discontent you barely registered emitting a few seconds ago rang out like a dog whistle to her ears.

Just you wait…” she cackles, her twisted grin raising the hairs on the back of your neck.

Surely she can’t be talking to you, right? You were simply spending time at the park with your kiddo. What could she be going on about? Maybe she’s confused?

But no. She’s definitely talking to you. Your scrunched brow and disappointed demeanor when dealing with your tot’s tiff was like a lighthouse, beckoning Granny to saunter over and give her unsolicited two cents.

”Excuse me?” You hesitantly reply, curious what she could possibly have to say to you, a complete stranger.

”I said, ‘just you wait’… You think you have it rough now with naptime? Wait till’ they stay up all day long and never give you a moment’s peace. Enjoy naps while you can because you won’t be able to for long!”

She walks away, chuckling to herself, leaving you to ruminate over the bleak future she’s just prophesied over you, and it’s hard to snap out of the funk even after she’s gone.

Okay, maybe that reenactment was a little more dramatic than how it usually goes down (not by much, though!), but a convo like that has happened to almost every new mom.

Go ahead, raise your hand if you’ve been personally victimized by the phrase, “Just you wait”!
    I know I have.

In fact, it just happened to me a week or so ago. I had to use the restroom at a car dealership when I ran into an employee while I was washing my hands. Someone had made a mess in one of the stalls, and she commented that she had to clean up after a little boy in that bathroom stall the day before.

I laughed and mentioned that I have three girls and only one boy, so the bathroom messes at my house thankfully haven’t been too bad so far.

She laughed and then responded, “Oh, three girls? JUST YOU WAIT. They’re worse than the boys! Hogging the bathroom, spraying the seat, fighting for time in the morning. It’s not bad yet, sure, but you’ll see once they’re teens.”

    K. Thanks, lady. Super encouraging and edifying!

Like all moms, I know that every age has its own struggles, and with each new stage comes new issues we’ll have to tackle, but must we highlight the negative in every casual interaction? Why do conversations always default to how bad it will be, and never focus on how much joy the future holds for parents?

No, of course things aren’t perfect for anyone- we’re all well aware. But can we at least try and make an effort to be positive and encouraging when given the choice?

I’ve never left a conversation like that feeling renewed or inspired about the parenting journey ahead of me.
I will say, though, the interactions I’ve had with strangers that truly left a positive mark on me are the ones where the little old lady in the store came up and told me all about how raising her own four kids was the highlight of her life, or the older gentleman who took the time to walk over and compliment how well-behaved my kids were being.

Those are the things we should be approaching new parents about! Let’s fill their cup, not add to their plate.

Newborns can be tough, toddlers will test you, and big kids have their hurdles, but what nobody tells you is that each stage has its perks, too! I miss those tiny potato baby days where all they did was eat, poop, and snuggle. The preschool years are so fun when they’ve still got the baby face but their personality begins to blossom. And when they start to get older and come into their own as big kids, it’s incredible to imagine that this goofy kid cracking jokes and holding deep conversations with you is actually yours! It’s been such a joy and blessing to watch each of my kids grow into the humans they’ve become today. Every year I think they’ve reached peak coolness, and then every year I’m pleasantly surprised by the new ways they’ve grown in every way.

That’s not to say things won’t be tough sometimes; there’s no doubt about that. But if there’s one thing I could say to every burnt-out, exhausted young mom out there, it would be: “Yes, I know it’s tough right now, but

    just you wait…

It gets better than you could ever imagine.”

  • Exploring Cozy Cafes: Must-Visit Coffee Spots in Eastern Minnesota and Western Wisconsin

I’m one of those “weird” people who don’t drink caffeine, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying any and every local coffee shop decaf espresso I can get my hands on. But if I’m being honest, I think I derive most of my enjoyment from the vibe of a good, cozy cafe. I’m no Starbucks hater, but you can’t beat the ambiance of a carefully crafted coffee shop aesthetic, a passionate barista, and unique drink selections. If you’re equally in love with the whole “going out for coffee” experience, you’ve got to check these places out.

    1. Ember and Bean (Oakdale MN and Hudson WI)

You may have heard of Ember and Bean’s location in Hudson, WI, but did you know they have another newer location located within Norhart’s Apartment building in Oakdale? A big perk to this location is the inclusion of an indoor parking garage for those chilly winter days when you need to warm up with a hot latte.

The Oakdale location is super family-friendly with a designated kids area equipped with toys, games, and a cute teepee. I personally love their mochas, and my kids enjoyed their hot cocoas that the baristas jazzed up with some whipped cream and sprinkles.

Their Hudson location is super cute and quaint, tucked away in a small building close to the river. I love that you can grab a coffee and hang out in their cute cafe, or take it to go and enjoy the water views while taking a walk.

    1. Green Bridge Coffee (Stillwater MN)

Stillwater is one of my favorite places. I love everything about it. One of my husband’s and my favorite places to go while we’re there is Green Bridge Coffee. It’s got a cool, minimalist look with local art hanging up and an e-bike rental place in the back of the cafe.

Photo from around Halloween time last year

We’ve gone many times over the years and always love the relaxed and welcoming vibe from the employees behind the counter. The coffee is great and the location is top notch. It’s the perfect place to get a coffee before heading up the hill to Teddy Bear Park with the kids to get their energy out.

    1. Sunshine Coffee Co (Lake Elmo MN)

Sunshine Coffee certainly lives up to their name with their cheerful interior decorating and plenty of places to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. While the inside is very small, they make up for it with chairs and tables outside when the weather is nice. Their location on Lake Elmo’s cute main drag is nice and central, and only a two minute walk to the Lake Elmo Library.

    1. MADE Coffee (Stillwater MN)

While MADE doesn’t make my absolute favorite coffee in the world (It’s still good! It’s just more of a high end bean that tastes slightly bitter to me), I had to include them just because I love their location. They’re located right next to the staircase in Stillwater on Main Street. You can climb the historic stairs (all 119 of them!) to help get your daily steps in, then walk right over to MADE and reward yourself with a sweet treat, like one of their pastries or gluten-free granola bars.

There are so many local non-chain coffee options, which ones are your favorites? Share below in the comments!

  • Kid-Free Date Nights: Unique Spots in Western Wisconsin & Eastern Minnesota (That Aren’t Just Dinner and a Movie!)

Ah, the elusive date night- the desperate scramble to find childcare, the tedious task of choosing where to go and what to do, and of course, spending 90% of your time on said date talking about your kiddo.

It’s not that date night isn’t worth the effort, it is! But trying to come up with a fresh idea each time can be tough. No worries though, I’ve got you covered with some cool, unique locations for you and your hun bun to hit up next time you decide to leave the rugrats at home and reconnect for 1 – 3ish hours before driving the babysitter home before her curfew is up.

    • Mini Golf and Dinner at The Drive In (Taylors Falls)
If you’re looking to have some lighthearted fun and enjoy an activity that’s not just for kids, check out The Drive In’s mini golf course! With 18 holes, it’s enough time to slow down and actually enjoy each other’s company while having an uninterrupted conversation (for once!). You can’t skip the food or the homemade rootbeer at the retro drive in restaurant, either.
If you’re in the mood for a sweet treat after you’ve kicked your spouse’s butt at putt-putt, swing by Coffee Talk for some coffee and baked goods, or visit Schoony’s Malt Shop for a milkshake or scoop of ice cream.
    • Kari’s Create and Paint Studio and MatchStick (Stillwater)
For those of you who are on the creative side rather than athletic, Kari’s Create and Paint Studio might be right up your alley. If you’ve really got your life together, you can book ahead of time, but if you’re like me (aka just winging it), they take walk-ins Thursday through Sunday 11am – 7pm! You can decorate a special piece of pottery or create a custom canvas painting to commemorate your romantic night away. Who says all the art hung on your walls has to be made by the kids?
Once you’ve painted your hearts out, stroll down Stillwater’s Hallmarkesque downtown area to MatchStick restaurant located inside of the new Hotel Crosby.
You have to try their caramelized brussels sprouts! Everything I’ve tried there has been delicious, and the vibe is unmatched (pun intended). It’s got a moody, dark ambiance, and an awesome waiting area to pass the time in while your table is being prepared. If you’re feeling really wild, book a room at Hotel Crosby (okay this one you really do need to plan ahead for)- it’s such a cool hotel with a rooftop hottub, and the perfect location to explore your surroundings.
    • Valley Bookseller and Trolley Tours
Fellow bookworms and history buffs, you’re going to appreciate this one! If you’re all about enriching activities, and stimulating your minds- you’ve got to book a trolley tour with Stillwater Trolley. They have historic tours and haunted tours for the lovebirds, but keep their princess and story time tours in mind for the next time you visit with the kids in tow. Once you’re done there, grab a latte at The Daily Grind Espresso Cafe located inside Valley Bookseller and peruse the latest bestsellers. If coffee’s not what you’re looking for, you can grab a cocktail at Brick & Bourbon and enjoy the patio view before walking across the lift bridge for a little fresh air.

These are only a few options, but there are so many interesting, cool places to explore for date night- share your favorite date night spot in the comments below!

  • Cool Indoor Activities for Hot Summer Days

Whew, what a weekend! Between regular softball games, DIBS, and our daughter’s tournament (which she won – “Go Cheetah Ponies”!), it felt like we spent the entire weekend at the ball field.
And while I won’t complain about the several Kona Ice cups I had and the quality family time we spent together, I will say that staring into the sun for hours upon hours did make me feel like crawling into a dark cave and hibernating for a day or two. With four kids and endless activities, that’s never going to happen for me, and I doubt it will happen for you either, dear reader, so instead, this week I’ll be highlighting some indoor activities that will help us all beat the heat.

    Tuesday, July 15th

    1. Mixed Nuts Kids’ Comedy Show at The Hudson Library
Stay cool indoors and enjoy a family friendly comedy show at the Hudson Library put on by a local comedy troupe, A Touch of Magic Entertainment from 10:30 – 11:30 AM. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to join in on a STEM activity led by Mr. Mick!
    2. Treasure Beyond Measure at Valley Library (Lakeland, MN)
If you didn’t get enough of A Touch of Magic earlier in the day in Hudson, head on over to the library in Lakeland to catch their pirate show! The show offers free laughs and will have you “hooked” in no time.

    Wednesday, July 16th

    1. Let’s Create at Bayport Library
Get a little reprieve from the heat and head to crafting time at the library from 2:00 – 2:45 PM. Wednesday’s theme is “Forest Explorers” and kids can use supplies provided by the library to create something you can find in the forest, or anything else their imaginations come up with. Open to kids of all ages. Once they’re done, drive down the road to Afton and visit one of my favorite places, Selma’s, to treat yourself to some delicious ice cream.

    Thursday, July 17th

    1. Outdoor Survival Class with Minnesota DNR
From 10:30 – 11:30 AM, a DNR employee will be leading a class all about how to survive in tough situations. Learn essential skills and get professional advice on how to navigate when lost, start a fire, and pack a go-bag. The event is free, but registration is required.
    2. Let’s Play Game Day at Lake Elmo Library
If your family is anything like mine, you love a good board game and puzzles. The Lake Elmo Library is offering a midday game session from 2:00 – 3:00 PM, hosted by a teen volunteer. This activity is appropriate for anyone age 2 and up. If you’re up for it, there will be an outdoor water table activity to participate in afterwards!
    3. Free Movie at Bayport Library
If games aren’t really your thing, you might want to head over to the Bayport Library for an afternoon matinee. They’ll be showing Paddington in Peru from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. Popcorn and fresh lemonade provided!

    Friday, July 18th

    1. The Bazillions in Lake Elmo
Rock out to The Bazillions, a kid-friendly rock-n-roll musical group based out of the Twin Cities from 10:30 – 11:30 AM at the Lake Elmo Library. This concert is appropriate for all ages, and is free to attend. Once you’re done jamming, don’t forget to head over to the newly opened Lake Elmo Creamery just a short stroll down the block.
    2. Llamas From Carlson Farm at the Stillwater Library
This one is an outdoor activity, but it sounded so fun, I had to share it anyway. Books aren’t the only thing you’ll find at the Stillwater Library on Friday, you’ll be able to meet and pet a real life llama on the lawn from 10:00AM – 1:00PM, while getting all of your most nagging llamaesque questions answered by an expert. It’s going to be llamazing!

    Saturday, July 19th

    1. Family Movie Matinee at the Hudson Library
From 1:00 – 3:00 PM, the Hudson Library will be putting on a free showing of “The Bad Guys”. This is the perfect opportunity to refresh your memory before going to see the new “The Bad Guys 2” movie coming out in August!

    Sunday, July 20th

    1. Micro Museum: The Shoebox Creator at Washington County Historic Courthouse
This is such a cool opportunity! This is a drop-in event from 1:00 – 4:00 PM where kids and families can work on creating a shoe box sized museum about the topic or category of their choice. Follow the provided guidelines, and prepare your project to be displayed for the entire month of August!

As you can see, there’s no shortage of things to do indoors this week, in case you’re looking to break up your time in the sun a little bit. That said, don’t forget to enjoy the beautiful weather while we have it, and let me know if you partake in any of the activities listed!

  • Family-Friendly Events in River Towns This Summer

Sit down, buckle up, and get your calendar out, because it’s going to be a long post today- there are SO many fun local summer events to highlight!

River towns all up and down the St. Croix really know how to party when summertime (finally!) comes along. To celebrate the good vibes, sun and fun, summer festivals and events pop up like crazy. If you can’t make one, don’t fret- there will be plenty of others for you to check out!

Let’s kick off our list with River Falls Days, happening this week from 7/10 – 7/13.

Photo courtesy of the River Falls Days Facebook page

Take the night off from cooking dinner on Thursday and head out to Rush River’s Thursday Market to get a nice cold beer and some yummy grub for the whole family from the food truck while enjoying live music.
Friday, take advantage of the free walking tacos at First Covenant Church, then head over to Main Street to enjoy the parade (bonus, free candy counts as dessert).
Burn off all that energy the sugar from the parade provided with a kids water fight over at the River Falls Fire Hall from 11am – 1pm before heading over to the city hall plaza for tons of free kids activities that will continue throughout the rest of the weekend.

Next up is Rivertown Days in Hastings. While you do have to pay admission to access the music in downtown Hastings and entrance to the carnival on Friday, your presale ticket is good for the whole weekend and kids 12 and under are free!
Things you will not need a ticket for are: the car show, the arts and crafts fair, and the carnival on Sunday 7/20.

There is no shortage of family-friendly things to do at Rivertown Days. There will be a free kickoff event on 7/17 with complimentary burgers, cookies, drinks, and music provided for guests, along with a cool antique fire engine show and a light and water show at the Hastings Golf Course.

On Friday, the gates open and there will be concerts, food trucks, beer, and carnival rides – the perfect way to enjoy the weather and get some outside hours in. Saturday and Sunday are chock-full of things to do like a craft fair, petting zoo, bubble park, and even a duck race! If you have younger children, be sure to check out the River of Life Kids Carnival on Saturday from 10am – 2pm at River of Life Church (800 Vermilion St).

Photo courtesy of Hudson’s Chamber of Commerce website

Hudson really knows how to bring the community together with tons of fun events throughout the summer. If you’re a music lover, you’ll appreciate the free concerts in the park on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from now til the end of August. Their featured bands can be found on their website, and the concerts take place at the bandshell at Lakefront Park on 505 First Street.

If you’re looking for even more fun in the sun in Hudson, you can’t miss St. Croix Riverfest! Show your appreciation for this beautiful town by participating in the annual River Cleanup, where you’ll not only collect trash and beautify the area, but connect with other locals as well. It’s a great opportunity to serve as a family and teach kiddos about stewardship and the value of community.

Tons of vendors and businesses have come together to offer plenty of free, fun and educational opportunities throughout Riverfest for families, including but not limited to: puppet shows, crafts, a movie night, an ice cream social, and a concert put on by the St. Croix Valley Community Band.

I can’t forget to include my absolute favorite river town, Stillwater. Stillwater just kicked off their Summer Tuesday events on 7/8 and will continue to provide free family entertainment weekly until 8/12. Each Tuesday, the vendor market opens at 5pm, live music plays from 6-8pm, and a kid-appropriate movie begins 10 minutes after sunset. There’s a different activity each week, ranging from things like Snake Discovery (see my previous post about them here), to big truck night, to crafts, etc.
Bring a blanket or a chair, and feel free to bring along your well behaved furry friends, too.

WBL’s Marketfest is a laid back collection of vendors, music, and themed weeks. Check the website to see what the theme of the night is, to get an idea of the types of entertainment and attractions that will be offered. If your kiddo has always wanted to meet a real-life policeman, they’ll have the opportunity to do so on July 17th during Public Health and Safety Night. If science is more your style, don’t miss the AFSA Science & Agriculture Night on 7/24 where there will be presentations on science and ag activities along with the usual music and businesses. Their final week’s theme is the Environmental Resource Expo – a great place for curious minds to ask all the questions they have about composting, pollinators, conservation and more.

There are plenty more activities throughout eastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin that I’ll be writing about soon, but this list should keep your family busy for most of the summer. Be sure to subscribe to keep up with the latest happenings!

  • Meet Your Favorite Reptiles from YouTube at Snake Discovery

Salamanders, turtles, and snakes- oh my!

We recently had the pleasure of enjoying a show put on by Snake Discovery at the Hudson Library. If you haven’t heard of them yet, they’re a hugely successful zoo/reptile experience with a massive YouTube following of nearly 3.5 million subscribers, and they’re located right here in Maplewood, MN!

The host of the library show was engaging and incredibly patient- he took the time to go around and make sure each child (and willing adult!) had the chance to individually see and gently pet each reptile. They had a scale-less snake that felt as soft as a peach, a turtle, some salamanders and snakes, and even a huge boa constrictor. After the show, my 9 year old insisted that we *must* go to Snake Discovery for his birthday this year.

Admission to the zoo is reasonably priced at $11/adult, $9/senior and child (ages 3-12), and free admission for kids under 2, making it a great option for large families.
Snake Discovery has several fun events planned this year, including habitat crafts, jewelry making, and night hikes where zoo-goers are able to explore the facility after dark with special flashlights, all available to check out on their website under the events tab.

On Saturday, July 19, they’ll be hosting a Meet & Greet event, where the owners Ed and Emily will be in to meet fans from 1:00 – 4:00pm. The event is free with zoo admission, and sounds like a great “backstage pass” opportunity for fans of their YouTube channel!

  • Family Fun: Exploring Berry Farms in River Falls and Pizza in Saint Paul

Today I’m going to start out strong and kick off the blog with two awesome, family-friendly locations in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Yesterday we ventured over to White Pine Berry Farm in River Falls to do our annual strawberry picking. Just a quick hop across the border, and you’ll find the most delicious, fresh u-pick berries at the farm. We decided to go on a misty (turned quite rainy), overcast day, and luckily for us that meant we had the fields almost completely to ourselves.

Us, soaked to the bone, but happy!

In previous years, it’s been pretty busy when the weather is nice, but they’ve always had abundant picking, regardless. If you want to check what crops they have available and what hours they’re open, the farm posts on their Facebook page and updates their website regularly with pertinent picking info.

We love taking the tractor back to the fields and filling up our buckets with their ruby red gems. This year we didn’t partake in the “kid zone” that they offer, but they do have a couple of alpacas to feed and pet, along with some fun games and occasionally a bounce house.

After you’ve overflowed your berry buckets, be sure to head inside the barn to sample some freshly made donuts and homemade fudge! They offer so many bespoke items like alpaca wool stuffies, local honey, jams, and more.

After we had our fill of farming for the day, we decided to head back across the border to get some pizza. We ended up trying a new-t0-us place called OG Zaza in Saint Paul.
The location could not be better!

    If you’re a fan of:
    – New Haven style pizza
    – Tasty beers
    – Dining al fresco
Then this is the place for you. We were a little curious when we initially drove up to the building, but quickly realized we were facing the rear of it and had to go around to the parking lot to enter the courtyard. OG Zaza is located within a distillery called King Coil. The vibe is great, and the pizza was easy to order. One critique I would add is that they don’t allow build-your-own style pizzas, so my simple sausage pizza loving children were a little dismayed, but they made do with cheese and pepperoni.

We decided to head outside to eat in the courtyard. It’s littered with tons of seating, lots of greenery, a huge watertower to sit under, and some cool art. Lake Monster Brewing Co. is just steps away, which makes it really easy to go grab a beer to wash your pie down with. My husband got an apple cider ale that was crisp and refreshing.

Once we finished eating, we cleaned up and headed inside the building that surrounds the courtyard. We kept seeing people going in and coming out holding iced coffees, so naturally we had to check it out.
Inside the building was the most hip coffee shop possibly known to man, SK Coffee. I ordered a decaf iced mocha, half-sweet, as usual. The barista was great and took the time to tell me that they use a 70% cacao syrup, so it wouldn’t be too sweet. He encouraged me to try it made normally and offered to remake if I didn’t like it. I took his advice and was so glad I did, it was made perfectly and wasn’t cloyingly sweet or overpowering.

We decided to stroll around the building which was adorned with tons of colorful things to look at and fun art installations.
All in all, it was a great afternoon filled with both rural and urban fun! If you decided to stop by and check anywhere that I’ve recommended out, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
